Wyse Customer Reed Managed Services Receives 'Green Project of the Year' Award for 2008 From Computing Awards for Excellence

Wyse Thin Computing and Client Virtualization Solutions Replace Desktop PCs Resulting in Dramatic Reduction in Energy Consumption and 20 Percent Reduction of Annual IT Budget

Wyse Technology, the global leader in thin computing, today announced that its customer, Reed Managed Services, was recognized by the UK's Computing Awards for Excellence with the "Green Project of the Year" award. The Computing Awards for Excellence is now in its 16th year and was formed to recognize and reward the very highest standards of individual and collective IT achievement. This year's award was the first to recognize excellence among industry leaders in the area of green information technology.

The Computing Awards for Excellence were presented at a ceremony on November 5th at the Battersea Park Events Arena.

Reed's Green IT project included the replacement of 5500 desktop PCs with a Wyse thin computing solution, a new data center infrastructure based on 64-bit blade servers, and Citrix virtualization software.

The decision to implement Wyse thin computing was driven by a goal of achieving real reductions in energy consumption from IT; and a separate goal of increased operational efficiencies while improving the quality of IT provisioning.

This change delivered major energy consumption savings and enabled greener working practices for all staff. Previously PCs had to be left turned on 24x7 to allow overnight software patching. With Wyse's central management and faster start-up time of the Wyse terminals, staff simply turn off their terminals at lunchtime and again at the end of their working day.

The Wyse thin clients also delivered outstanding remote working capabilities and transformed Reed's global computer services. Reed employees log onto their personal settings at any thin client terminal in any office worldwide and with Reed's UK-based central data centers running 24x7, Reed can provide IT services via Wyse thin clients to its Australia operations on the same servers as when those servers would otherwise be standing idle. The elimination of local workstation storage and centralized storage of data and applications also meant critical information was always securely backed up and protected.

Within a year of migrating to a thin computing model, Wyse thin computers have helped Reed achieve its goal of significantly reducing its carbon footprint.

"At Wyse, we are committed to developing and producing products which have the smallest environmental footprint possible and are thrilled to be partnering with companies like Reed to install Wyse thin clients to help save money, energy and ultimately, the environment," according to Maryam Alexandrian, Senior VP of Worldwide Sales & Channels at Wyse. "We congratulate Reed for receiving this prestigious 'Green Project of the Year' award and for setting a strong example of corporate responsibility."

In replacing the PCs with thin terminals across all locations, Reed witnessed a dramatic reduction in energy consumption -- approximately 5.5 million Kilo Watt hours of power -- one of the main causes of carbon emissions. These, combined with halving the number of storage drives and reducing the number of servers by a factor of 20, have resulted in a 20% reduction in Reed's annual IT budget.

"Cutting our IT budget by 20% through thin clients, virtualization, as well as achieving reduced energy consumption is a tremendous result for us," concludes Sean Whetstone, Head of IT Services for Reed Managed Services. "Not only have we met our objective to significantly reduce our carbon emissions, but we have also discovered a more cost-efficient way of operating and growing our business, which will continue to reduce our operating costs for years to come."

Reed is a leading Global recruitment agency. With more than 4,000 users, including recruitment consultants and back office employees, across 300 branch locations in the UK, Eastern Europe, Middle East and Asia Pacific, the company is reliant on its IT team to maintain fluid communication between branches and to ensure client information is easily accessible in a secure environment. Reed, the UK's leading specialist recruitment and HR services provider, has been providing recruitment solutions to employers and jobseekers for over 48 years.
