UK National Lottery Operator Goes for Securer and Greener IT with Wyse Cloud Client Computing
Adopting Wyse Cloud Client Computing Solutions Brings Improved Security, Better Data Management, Energy Efficiency, and Overall Total Cost of Ownership
LONDON, UK –
10/06/2010 -
Wyse Technology, the global leader in cloud client computing , today announced that Camelot UK Lotteries Ltd, the licensed operator of the UK National Lottery, is implementing Wyse cloud client computing at its head office and prize payment centre. The project will see the majority of head office PCs replaced with Wyse cloud clients over the course of the next two months. Wyse cloud clients are easier to maintain than PCs and will help improve Camelot’s efficiencies and reduce its carbon footprint through deploying more energy efficient systems on every desktop.
In 2009, Camelot won the third Licence to operate the UK National Lottery, and began a major efficiency drive across its business to reduce costs and increase the amounts it returns to Good Causes from the sale of National Lottery tickets. On reviewing its existing desktop infrastructure, Camelot identified a requirement to reduce support costs associated with managing a large population of networked PCs. It decided to undertake a replacement of over 600 PCs with cloud client computing solutions from Wyse Technology. Once complete, this will include all back office functions including the contact centre that handles prize enquiries from lottery players.
During the first phase of project’s implementation, the improvement systems management of the cloud clients was successfully demonstrated when Wyse plug-and-play capability was fully tested. New Wyse cloud client desktops could be pre-populated and set-up centrally, ready for staff to switch over from their original PCs with minimum fuss.
Camelot is committed to reducing its carbon emissions and implementing energy efficiency measures around its use of information technology, while maintaining the highest levels of IT security and ensuring that Camelot employees have the best tools available to them to run the UK National Lottery to the very high standards consistently achieved across the organisation.
The Wyse cloud clients enable Camelot to extend its carbon emissions reduction strategy to the desktop because each device has a typical energy consumption of 6.6 watts which is less than 10% of the energy consumed by the PCs they are replacing. With a lifespan of up to 10 years, the Wyse cloud clients will last two to three times longer than a PC, meaning Camelot avoids the costs of more frequent PC replacement. It also guards against future technological obsolescence and e-waste.
A further benefit of choosing Wyse cloud clients was the small form factor. This is a key requirement because Camelot is remodeling its office space with an improved layout and more efficient use of space.
Nigel Proctor, Wintel systems manager, Camelot UK Lotteries Limited said: “As part of our commitment to delivering cost reductions and improved efficiency initiatives during the third Licence period, Camelot’s desktop infrastructure is now undergoing a major refresh. And thin client computing was an obvious direction for us to choose. Wyse stood out from the competition because their technology is easy to manage and it also meets our requirements for a unit that takes up the least amount of desk space and has low power consumption, while improving IT security and the efficiency of our desktops.”
David Angwin, director of marketing EMEA, Wyse Technology said: “When one of the UK’s most well known companies selects our technology this is further evidence of how cloud client computing is becoming a mainstream requirement. We’re delighted to be helping Camelot make a difference to how its desktop systems support the back office for the UK National Lottery.”
