Actel Case Study
Actel saves money remotely managing engineering center with Wyse thin clientsThe Challenge: Maintain tight control of engineering resources and reduce IT costs of managing engineering office abroad
Actel Corporation (www.actel.com) develops programmable logic integrated circuits that are used in multiple applications from earth-orbiting satellites and portable medical devices to industrial control equipment, data centers, and consumer devices. Called field-programmable gate arrays (FPGAs), these semiconductors are popular with customers and developers, who can program them after they've been manufactured. This gives customers the advantage of updating and improving the chip's functionality after it leaves the factory.
In the past, Actel outsourced some of its engineering work abroad. The company decided to bring this function in-house to have greater control over development work, generate efficiencies, and save money. "With the opportunity to establish an engineering center from scratch, we wanted an infrastructure that would give us maximum control, the ability to easily manage IT resources remotely from headquarters, and deliver high availability all on a Linux-based platform," explains David Sadowsky, IT infrastructure manager for Actel.
