Challenge: Boosting security and productivity while reducing costs and carbon footprint
Founded in 1995 and headquartered in Delhi, India, Sunstar Overseas Ltd specialises in manufacturing and exporting basmati rice. The organisation's primary manufacturing and processing plant is located near Delhi at Bahalgarh, Sonepat, in Haryana while other mills are located in Amritsar, Punjab and Uttar Pradesh. Around two-thirds of the rice produced by Sunstar Overseas is exported, primarily to Gulf countries; another one-third is sold in India. In 2008/09, the organisation turned over US$170 million.
A single data centre supports a 250-strong workforce distributed across the country. In 2008, Sunstar Overseas found that employees were removing sensitive data without authorisation across unsecured wireless networks and through digital storage media. If any of this information leaked into the public domain, the organisation faced embarrassment and a potential loss of competitive advantage. In addition, individually patching and upgrading the software and operating system for every desktop computer across a geographically-distributed operation was proving time-consuming and expensive, limiting the IT team's ability to contribute effectively to business projects. "We also found that our desktop PCs were consuming 150–200 watts per hour, raising our costs and giving us a larger environmental footprint than we were comfortable with," said Paramjeet Sharma, Manager IT, Sunstar Overseas. "We wanted to see if we could reduce the ambient noise throughout our workplace and increase the available real estate on desks to improve conditions for our staff and boost productivity."
