Bob’s Discount Furniture has built strong brand awareness and customer loyalty by providing quality furniture at low prices. The company was named 2008 Furniture Retailer of the Year for its ability to deliver customers a high-quality shopping experience that surpasses their “discount” expectations.
The company takes a similar approach to its computing systems: it demands high-quality performance while seeking to save money where possible. It adopted virtual desktops on its sales floor more than ten years ago. As the company has grown – Bob’s has opened four or five new stores a year on average for the past few years – it began to deploy thin clients more widely, to serve other parts of the business.
The thin-client architecture helped Bob’s scale up its IT systems, offering high performance and greater ease of management, consistency across devices, and cost savings compared to PCs. But while Bob’s was pleased with the lower security profile, rapid deployment, and centralized computing capabilities of its Citrix-based system, its thin clients were the weak link in the solution.
